This self-access test takes about 15–20 minutes. It checks your background, listening, reading, and speaking, and gives you a preliminary course recommendation — from VIET 101 through the advanced sequence.
Background survey — your language history and connection to Vietnamese
Listening — short audio clips with comprehension questions
Reading — short passages with comprehension questions
Speaking — a few recorded prompts (microphone required; typing is a fallback)
This test alone does not finalize your placement. Every result requires a short
follow-up conversation (Zoom or in person) with the instructor to confirm the right course —
this matters especially for heritage learners, whose spoken and literacy skills often differ.
You'll get instructions for scheduling that at the end.
Step 1 of 4
Background survey
There are no right or wrong answers here — this just gives your instructor context.
How much prior study or exposure have you had?Rate yourself (1 = not at all, 5 = very comfortable)
Can you read Vietnamese text with tone marks (dấu)?Can you write a short paragraph (3–5 sentences) in Vietnamese?Anything else about your experience with Vietnamese? (optional)
Step 2 of 4 — Listening
Listen and answer
You can replay as many times as you like.
Your browser/device doesn't have a Vietnamese voice available for playback — read the transcript instead:
Step 3 of 4 — Reading
Read and answer
Step 4 of 4 — Speaking
Record your responses
Answer in Vietnamese as best you can — it's fine to pause, restart, or mix in English if you get stuck. If your microphone isn't available, type your response instead.

Since Vietnamese is your first language, this test isn't the right tool for you — placement, credit, and course options for native speakers are handled individually. Please email phunghuy@unc.edu to set up a short conversation with the instructor.

Heritage learner profile noted. Heritage learners often have uneven skill
profiles (e.g. strong listening/speaking but developing reading/writing, or the reverse).
Your combined score above is a starting point, not the full picture — the follow-up interview
will weigh this heavily.
Next steps — both required:
Download your results below and submit the .zip file to the placement test assignment in Canvas.
Email phunghuy@unc.edu to schedule a short Zoom or in-person conversation with the instructor — this confirms your final placement.

This builds one .zip file with your survey, listening/reading answers, and speaking recordings — including an instructor_report.html your instructor can open directly, audio and all, with no other files needed. Submit it to the Canvas assignment, and bring or send a copy to your follow-up interview.
